At any conversation on bug out bags we frequently find everyone has an opinion. You are likely to get some very interesting discussions on just what should be included in such kits. If you have twenty people in the discussion chances are you will have twenty different opinions. So the question remains as to what factors determine what should be included in ones bug out bag.
The first item to be placed under the microscope for consideration is the age of the person or ages of the family members. Babies will require diapers, small children will need toys to play with, and Adults will require flashlights and tools while the elderly possess their own specific needs.
We must consider the time of the year. Winter clothing needs are very different then what we find in the summer time. This is pretty much the reason why we review and once again pack our kits for the different seasons. We require warmer clothing in the winter then what we need in the summer. In the same sense we must also consider what region of the country we are talking about. If you reside in Arizona your needs are different then someone who lives in Maine.
The political realities and societies in general play a major role in you being prepared. As an example, in Delaware you might place a weapon on your bag requirements list while in the state of New Jersey you will not have any sort of weapon in your bug out bag.
If someone in your group has a serious medical problem this will need to be considered. An example would be a diabetic who will require a supply of insulin to survive. Special medical needs must come under consideration. Do you have a member of your family who needs inhalers? Stock up on some if you do. Does a member need a daily supply of blood pressure medications? These may be a more difficult item to stock up with however it is not unsurpassable.
If you are listening to the radio and are instructed to take the proper precautions and evacuate an area you will have less time than if you are watching a hurricane slowly make its way up the coast. Take all scenarios under consideration when doing your planning. You must consider the length of time that you have to prepare for an upcoming disaster.
When setting up your bug out bag consider your financial situation as well. You may not have as much money to invest as does Mr. Smith down the street. Not everyone has unlimited funds in which to invest in survival gear and supplies. We have to make do with what we have available.
Give some thought as to how long you may have to be in a bug out environment. You will require more items if you plan for 30 days as opposed to one week. Plan accordingly.
Have a firm destination in mind. You can not just wander around the country. Take and create several different alternatives as to where you will go. Leave yourself options but be sure to have a destination in mind.
Lastly, you will need to consider what your skill levels are. You can not survive if you don’t know how to do it. All the best equipment in the world will not help you if you don’t have the common sense and training to use it.
